About Jacques

A Practical Approach to Life's Hardest Chapters

The practice works with individuals and couples — from persistent anxiety, depression and grief to relationship breakdowns and major life transitions. These difficulties can show up as feeling overwhelmed, exhaustion, confusion, or recurring tension in relationships. In therapy, attention is given to both what you are currently feeling and the historical behavioural patterns in your life and relationships. Therapy offers a space to share and explore what is happening, so that new possibilities can begin to emerge.

Jacques is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and practises within the ethical and professional standards required of clinical psychologists. His work is guided by a commitment to confidentiality, professional responsibility, and ongoing professional development aligned with current clinical research and practice. Sessions in English or Afrikaans.

Life Transitions

Major life changes — retirement, divorce, a terminal diagnosis, bereavement — can destabilise even the most resilient person. The practice offers support for adjusting to transitions that alter one's sense of identity, purpose, or daily structure.

Burnout & Stress

Burnout extends well beyond fatigue — it is a state of chronic exhaustion that affects physical health, cognitive functioning, and sense of self. The practice helps clients identify the underlying drivers and develop sustainable strategies for recovery.

Relationship Problems

Relationship difficulties — including communication breakdown, recurring conflict, and couples in crisis — are addressed in individual or joint sessions. The focus is on understanding relational patterns and building more effective ways of engaging.

Addiction & Compulsive Behaviours

Patterns of gambling, gaming, pornography use, and other compulsive behaviours are often ways of coping with emotional pain, stress, or a sense of numbness. Therapy offers space to understand how these behaviours have taken shape, what they may be responding to, and how one might begin to relate differently to oneself and to others.

Living with Neurological Illness

A diagnosis of Alzheimer's or Parkinson's — whether received personally or by a family member — carries significant psychological weight. The practice offers support to both patients and their caregivers, addressing the emotional demands of living with or caring for a neurological condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

A registered Clinical Psychologist holds a master's degree and is registered with the HPCSA. This qualification authorises the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a full range of psychological conditions — including complex mood disorders, trauma, and neurological illness. Counsellors typically hold shorter qualifications and work with less complex presentations. If you are unsure which is right for your situation, contact the practice directly to discuss.

Yes. Sessions are available both in person at the practice in Danabaai and online via video call. Online sessions are conducted on a secure platform and are just as effective as in-person sessions for most presentations. If you are outside the Garden Route area, online sessions are a practical option.

Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is strictly confidential and protected under the Health Professions Act and HPCSA ethical guidelines. The only exceptions are situations where there is an imminent risk of serious harm to the client or others — and even in those circumstances, the matter would be discussed with the client first wherever possible.

A useful guideline: if what you are experiencing is affecting your daily functioning, your relationships, or your ability to enjoy life — and it has been going on for more than a few weeks — it is worth speaking to someone. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from support. Many clients seek assistance simply to understand themselves better or to navigate a difficult period more effectively.

Medical aids cover therapy services according to the benefits available on your plan. Claims are submitted on your behalf. PMB applications are available when your condition qualifies, and PMB-funded sessions do not affect your savings account. PMB benefits may also apply to hospital plans.

Sessions are typically booked in 60-minute slots.

  • Standard rate: R250 per 20 minutes
  • Shorter sessions can be arranged by agreement
  • For longer-term therapeutic work, the fee structure becomes more accommodating over time

Open conversations about affordability are encouraged. If you are a SASSA beneficiary, please mention this when making contact so that an appropriate arrangement can be discussed.

Prescribed minimum benefits (PMB's) are a set of defined benefits to ensure that all medical scheme members have access to certain minimum health services, regardless of the benefit option they have selected.

The lists of conditions are:

  1. Acute delusional mood, anxiety, personality, perception disorders and organic mental disorders caused by drugs.
  2. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.
  3. Attempted suicide, irrespective of cause.
  4. Major affective disorders, including unipolar and bi-polar depression.

It is important to understand the following:

  • Health professionals can only apply for a PMB for a patient if they meet the diagnostic criteria for one of the conditions specified on the list. One cannot diagnose a condition that is not present, nor can an application be made without initial consultation and assessment.
  • If a successful PMB application has been made, PMB sessions are shared between the psychologist and psychiatrist (if one is involved).
  • PMB requires disclosure of the condition. You should be aware that there may be implications for having a diagnosis on record which may include exclusion criteria being applied to life insurance, challenges with emigration, etc.
  • If you have used these sessions for treatment and later require inpatient admission in the year, then you may not have access to these through the PMB.

The first session is primarily about understanding what has brought the client in. Questions are asked about background, current circumstances, and what the client is hoping to achieve. There is no pressure to share more than feels comfortable. By the end of the session, there is usually a clearer picture of what is being worked with and how the process might proceed.
